Museum of Modern Art , Salzburg Overview

The Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg is a collection of exquisite modern art housed in two different buildings, one of which is called the Rupertinum. It is located in the old town of Altstadt. The museum showcases international and Austrian works of contemporary and classical modernism.

It was opened in 1983 as the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art and Graphic Collection. First erected by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron, the building was used as a centre for the education of priests and students up until 1984. Its foundation as a museum is owed to the generous donation of his artworks by the Salzburg art dealer Friedrich Welz. The Rupertinum is famous for its early-Baroque style architecture. The artworks showcased here include , sculptures, paintings, graphic prints, and photography. The Generali Foundation Study Centre was moved into the Rupertinum in 2016.
