The Salzburg festival is one of the world’s biggest opera, music, and drama festival. It takes place each summer and lasts five weeks, starting in late July. It is a diverse program that includes classic performances and shows by various globally famous artists, along with events for the young.
The Salzburg Festival takes place in the heart of the city, with concerts and plays happening in and around the Festival Halls, Cathedral Square, St. Peter’s Abbey, The Mozarteum, Collegiate Church, Republic, etc. On 22 August 1920, the first Salzburg Festival was officially inaugurated with Reinhardt's performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's play Jedermann (Everyman) on the steps of Salzburg Cathedral, starring Alexander Moissi. Ever since it has become a tradition to perform Jedermann at Cathedral Square each year.
