St. Peter’s Abbey is often regarded as the spiritual heart of the city of Salzburg. These Baroque and Romanesque Halls became popular venues for themed concert evenings. The Abbey also houses Austria’s oldest library with an impressive reserve of ancient manuscripts.
Founded by Bishop Rupert in 696, the former cathedral is the oldest Benedictine monastery in the German-speaking world and has been housing monks for over 1,000 years. Built at the request of Prince Archbishop Guidobald, the Long Gallery inside the abbey features an exquisite painting collection.
