Orangutan Island, Ipoh Overview

Orangutan Island is the world's best rehabilitation and conservation center for Orangutans. Located in the heart of Bukit Merah, it is a 35-acre land neighboured by a beautiful lakeside resort. Incepted in 2000, Orangutan Island is still recognized as a global eco-tourism destination. The island offers an amazing experience to the visitors by the varied species of “People of the Jungle” or Orangutan. Orangutan Island is only accessible by a 15 minutes jetty ride which can be boarded from the near lakeside resort-Bukit Merah Laketown resort.

Orangutan Island Tour

The entire tour in the Orangutan island will take you closer to nature through a steel cage walkway and will give you an in depth knowledge about the endangered yet interesting Orang-utans. The entire walk is around 45 minutes to 1 and half hours long which is well guided by a staff. Visit the orang-utan infant care unit to meet and see a baby orang-utan or feed and play with the orang-utans for a captivating yet fun experience.

Jetty Details for Orangutan Island

Board a jetty from the Bukit Merah Laketown resort. Ride to Orangutan Island is a 15 minutes ride and itself offers a memorable experience to the visitors. The boat is scheduled every 45 minutes and starts its service from 9:00 AM. The boat fare is included in the entry ticket to Orangutan Island.

Best Time to Visit at Orangutan Island

The best time to visit Orangutan Island solely depends on the weather conditions. Months between March to October are considered to be the best for touring around Orangutan Island. Avoid going on rainy days because you won’t be able to spot Orangutan properly as they hide during this time. The morning hours are the most prominent hours to visit the island for a memorable walk in the windy yet beautiful weather.

How to Reach Orangutan Island, Perak?

Train: Board a train from Ipoh to Taiping which is around a 45 minutes trip. A taxi/ cab can be opted at Taiping to reach the near Bukit Merah Laketown Resort. Jetty is available from the resort destined to Orangutan Island.  

Bus: If you are planning to travel by bus, then take a bus from Terminal Amanjaya, Ipoh for Kamunting. From Kamunting, later a personal taxi or a cab can be hired to reach Bukit Merah Laketown Resort. A jetty then connects the resort and Orangutan Island.

Taxi/Car: Hop into a taxi or radio cab or drive a personal car to the lakeside resort for a convenient journey. It is a 3-4 hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur, a 1-hour drive from Penang, 1-hour drive from Ipoh via North-South Highway and just a 30-40 minutes’ drive from Taiping. Later, board a jetty from the lakeside resort for getting to orang-utan island.
