What is the best time to visit Luxor?

October to April is the best time to visit Luxor, and December to February is the core of it: days in the twenties, and the only stretch when a full day on the West Bank is comfortable.

Luxor is hotter than Cairo by six degrees in summer. July and August average about 41°C by day and the nights stay near 26°C. The record is 50°C, set in May.

It is also one of the driest inhabited places on Earth, about 8mm of rain a year, and in some years none at all. Rain is never the question here; heat is.

Whatever the month, the hour matters more than the season. The temples open early and there is no shade at any of them.

More about Best Time to Travel to Luxor

Peak Season in Luxor: December to February

December to February is the best window. Days sit around 22°C to 25°C, which is the only time you can walk Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple in one day.

Nights are cooler than people expect, about 7°C in January, so pack a layer. This is the busiest and priciest stretch, and Nile cruise cabins need booking two to three months ahead.

Shoulder Season in Luxor: October, November and March

October, November and March are the value months. Days run in the high twenties to low thirties, warm but workable, with noticeably fewer people and lower cruise rates than midwinter.

22 October is one of the two Abu Simbel sun alignments, which times well with an Aswan leg. March is the last comfortable month before the heat sets in properly.

Summer in Luxor: April to September

April to September is the heat season, and July and August average about 41°C. Nights stay near 26°C, so there is no relief after dark either. April is already in the mid-thirties.

Prices collapse and the sites are nearly empty. If your dates are fixed here, the pattern operators use is temples from about six to eleven in the morning, indoors and air-conditioned through the middle of the day, and out again from four until sunset.

Balloons Over the Valley of the Kings

The balloons launch before sunrise, and they fly year-round. Lift-off is timed so you are over the West Bank as the sun comes up behind the Nile, which is the one hour of the day the light is worth it.

Flights are cancelled on windy mornings, so book yours for the first morning of your stay and keep a day spare to rebook. Summer flights go up even earlier, before the heat builds.

Best Time of Day at the Temples

Karnak and the Valley of the Kings at opening, Luxor Temple after dark. There is no shade at any of the West Bank sites and the tombs themselves are unventilated and hotter than the outside air.

Luxor Temple is floodlit in the evening and is the best thing to do with the last hour of the day. Cross to the West Bank early, and be back before eleven from April onwards.

Ramadan and Local Festivals

Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. In 2026 it runs roughly 18 February to 19 March, with Eid al-Fitr around 20 to 22 March, and it starts on 8 February in 2027.

Temples, cruises and hotel restaurants run normally; many local cafes shorten daytime hours. Luxor's own festival is the Moulid of Abu al-Haggag, with boat-shaped floats through the town, on the Islamic calendar so the date moves each year. Check it locally rather than planning around it.
