Peak Balloon Season: September and October

September and October are the best two months in Cappadocia. Days run about 18°C to 27°C, mornings are still and clear, and the valleys turn colour.

Nights cool quickly, so carry a jacket for the pre-dawn balloon pickup. Crowds thin after the first week of September but the cave hotels stay expensive, so book ahead.

Spring in Cappadocia: April to June

April to June is mild and green, running about 10°C to 25°C, with the valleys in flower and the walking at its best.

May is the wettest month of the year, which surprises people. April nights are still cold, close to freezing at the start of the month, so pack for both.

Summer in Cappadocia: July and August

July and August are hot and dry but not extreme. Days average about 29°C, not the 40°C often quoted, and August is the driest month of the year.

The problem is shade: Goreme, the Ihlara valley and the underground cities are all exposed or unventilated. Walk before ten and after five, and expect the busiest crowds and the highest prices of the year.

Winter in Cappadocia: November to March

January averages 4°C by day and -4°C at night, with snow on about nine days. Cappadocia takes roughly 30 snow days a year across December to March, and its record low is -23.6°C.

This is the season photographers come for: fairy chimneys under snow, and the balloons do still fly. Prices are at their lowest, the valleys are empty, and the cave hotels are heated. Pack for real cold.
