1. Happo Pond

Lake

An alpine tarn at just over 2,000 m that holds the Ushiro-Tateyama ridge as a mirror image on a still morning, and the photograph Hakuba is known for. Be clear on the effort: the Alpen Line lifts take you to 1,830 m for 3,400 yen return, and from there it is 50 to 70 minutes on rocky, exposed ridge path. Snow lies here into early summer, so July to October is the reliable window.

Viewpoint

A cantilevered wooden deck and cafe terrace at the top of the Iwatake gondola, looking straight across at the Hakuba Three Peaks. Where Happo Pond makes you earn the view with an hour of ridge walking, this one hands it to you at the top of a lift, which makes it the choice on a short stay or with children. The deck faces east, so it is at its best in the morning.

Nature

A high wetland at around 1,900 m reached by gondola and then ropeway, with a level boardwalk looping past four marshes and alpine flowers in July and August. It is a genuine protected marsh rather than a ski slope in summer clothing, and the boardwalk makes it the easiest real alpine walking in the valley. Note it sits in Otari, not Hakuba village, about 20 minutes north.

Village

A shelf of thatched and shingled farmhouses above the valley, protected as an Important Preservation District, with terraced paddies that mirror the Hakuba range once they are flooded in late May. The road up is narrow and the village is lived in rather than staffed: park where signed, keep to the lanes, and do not walk into gardens or photograph residents.

Viewpoint

The composition on every Hakuba poster: a suspension bridge over the Himekawa, a thatched farmhouse on the bank and the peaks stacked behind it. Free, unstaffed and about five minutes by car from Hakuba Station, so it works as a stop rather than an outing. Cherry blossom in late April and the first snow on the ridge in October are the two windows worth timing for.

Hot Spring

Strongly alkaline water that comes out of the ground smooth enough that people call it a beauty spring, in public bathhouses at the foot of the Happo lifts. These are open to day visitors for around 850 yen rather than being locked behind a hotel, which is what separates them from most bathing in the valley. Outdoor tubs face the mountains. Open to 21:00.

7. Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium

Sporting Events & Stadiums

The normal and large hills built for the 1998 Nagano Olympics, still in competition use. A chairlift and lift take you to the start gate, where an observation platform puts you at the top of the in-run looking down the slope, which is the point of coming. It is the only 1998 venue in the valley you can go up rather than just look at.

Garden & Park

Around 300 alpine species planted across the slope at the top of the Goryu gondola, at 1,515m, so you get high-mountain flowers without the climb that normally comes with them. The Himalayan blue poppy is what people come for and it flowers from late June into July. Open roughly June to October only, and the gondola fare is charged separately from garden entry.

Dam

Japan's tallest dam at 186 m, wedged into a gorge in the Northern Alps and reached through a tunnel by electric bus. From late June to mid October it releases water in a plume you can feel from the walkway. Be honest about the journey: roughly two hours each way via Shinano-Omachi and Ogizawa, so this is a full day rather than an afternoon.
