A 1,400 year old temple that belongs to no single sect, which is why it has drawn pilgrims from every school of Japanese Buddhism. Its 1707 main hall is a National Treasure. Beneath the altar runs the Okaidan, a pitch-dark passage where you feel along the wall for a metal key said to grant paradise. Wild Japanese macaques that come down a steep valley to sit in a hot spring pool, the only place in the world where monkeys bathe like this. They are genuinely wild, they are not always there, and the park publishes a daily forecast for exactly that reason. Temple

Five separate shrines spread over several kilometres of mountainside, not one building. Most visitors reach Chusha, take a photograph and leave, and miss the point: the 2 km approach from the Zuishinmon gate to Okusha runs between 400 year old cedars and is one of the great shrine walks in Japan. Hokusai spent his last years in this small chestnut town, and the Hokusai Museum here holds work from that period along with two festival floats he painted the ceilings of. Ganshoin temple nearby has his phoenix staring down from its ceiling. The old town of sake breweries and confectioners is walkable in an afternoon. 25 to 35 minutes by Nagano Dentetsu, which the JR Pass does not cover.

5. Kagami-ike

Lake

A small pond below the serrated Togakushi ridge that holds the cliffs as a mirror image on a still morning, and turns spectacular in the second half of October. It is a separate walk from the shrine approach rather than something you pass on the way, which is why it earns its own stop. Go early: wind ruins the reflection by mid-morning.

Commercial Street

The 400 metre stone-paved street climbing to Zenko-ji's gate, lined with pilgrim lodgings, seven-spice sellers, miso shops and stalls selling oyaki, the buckwheat dumplings stuffed with vegetables that Nagano is known for. It sits outside the temple ticket, so it costs nothing, and it is where most people actually eat before or after the visit.

Buddhist Temple

Not part of Zenko-ji but a separate institution that jointly administers it: the Tendai head temple, with its own walled precinct, pond garden, treasure museum and imperial quarters, and its own admission rather than a place on the combined ticket. It also runs meditation, calligraphy and tea ceremony sessions for visitors, which the main temple does not.

Temple

One of the two head temples that jointly run Zenko-ji, and the Jodo-sect half of the arrangement, led by an abbess drawn from the aristocracy or the imperial family. It is a working convent rather than an exhibit, and the quiet inside its gate is the whole contrast with the approach outside. It sits immediately west of the main hall, so it costs a short detour and no ticket.

Museum

Togakushi was home to the Togakure ninja lineage, a real historical tradition rather than a modern invention, and this museum sets out its weapons and methods. Attached is a trick house of hidden doors, sloping floors and false walls that people genuinely struggle to find their way out of. It is the most entertaining stop on the Togakushi circuit and works well with children.

Art Gallery

Rebuilt and reopened in 2021 beside Zenko-ji, with a permanent gallery of Higashiyama Kaii's landscapes, whose quiet blue-green paintings of forests and roads suit the setting, alongside rotating exhibitions. 700 yen, closed Wednesdays. The rooftop terrace looks back over the temple roofs and is free to walk onto.

Mountain

The 1,904 metre serrated ridge behind Okusha, which the creation myth names as the hidden door the sun goddess was sealed behind, making the mountain itself the object of worship. Be clear about the hike: the ridge traverse includes chained sections and exposed scrambling and is not a casual walk. For most visitors it is the backdrop to Kagami-ike rather than a climb.

Sporting Events & Stadiums

The speed skating arena built for the 1998 Winter Olympics, roofed in a suspended wooden wave that is still one of the more striking pieces of architecture in the prefecture. Inside is the Nagano Olympic Museum, which is free, and in winter part of the oval opens as a public rink. The most visitable of the surviving 1998 venues.

The hill directly behind Zenko-ji, and Nagano's oldest public park, with around 500 cherry trees, a small zoo, a science museum and a view out over the city. It is free and five minutes from the temple gate, which makes it the obvious extension once you have finished at Zenko-ji rather than a separate trip.
