1. Kenrokuen Garden

Garden & Park

One of the three great gardens of Japan, laid out by the Maeda lords over two centuries across 11 hectares of ponds, streams and teahouses. The two-legged Kotoji stone lantern on the water's edge is the image the city sells itself on. In winter the pines are roped into yukitsuri cones to hold snow off the branches, which is the best reason to come in the cold months rather than the warm ones.

Forts & Palaces

The Maeda clan's castle, with turrets and a long storehouse rebuilt using the original joinery methods and roofed in white lead tiles that make the whole thing look snow-covered year round. It sits next door to Kenrokuen but has its own gate, its own ticket and its own calendar, so treat them as two visits rather than one. The grounds are free; only the buildings charge.

Neighborhood

The largest of Kanazawa's three surviving geisha quarters, a grid of two-storey wooden houses with fine slatted lattice fronts, ochre walls and stone paving. It is free and open, so you can walk it at any hour, and it is at its best in the hour before dusk when the lanterns come on and the day tour groups have gone. Gold leaf workshops and tea houses fill most of the frontages now.

A low circular glass building by SANAA with no front and no back, holding Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool, where people appear to stand underwater. One practical warning that most guides get wrong: the underground half of the pool is booked SAME DAY ONLY, from 09:00, online or at the desk, and you need a paid ticket to match. Around 200 stalls under one roof, trading since the Edo period and still the city's kitchen rather than a visitor attraction dressed up as one. Winter is snow crab season and the reason many people time a trip around it; the rest of the year it is sweet shrimp, yellowtail and sea bream. Narrow lanes of earthen walls where the Maeda clan's retainers lived, with water channels running alongside and the walls wrapped in straw mats through winter to stop them cracking. 7. Myoryuji Ninja Temple

Temple

A defensive temple built by the Maeda in 1643 with hidden staircases, trick doors, a well shaft said to run to the castle and a room designed for seppuku with no exit. There were never any ninja here; the name is modern. The one thing to plan for is access: entry is by guided tour in Japanese only, tours run every 30 to 60 minutes, you must reserve ahead, and pre-school children are not admitted.

A UNESCO-listed valley of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, thatched at a steep pitch to shed heavy snow and built without nails, about 75 to 85 minutes away by direct bus. Most services need a seat reservation and sell out in autumn. Temple

A shrine to Maeda Toshiie whose gate was designed in 1875 by a Dutch engineer, stacking a Japanese stone base under a European upper storey with stained glass that was once lit as a beacon for ships. There is nothing else like it in Japan, which is the whole reason to stop. Free, central, and a ten minute walk from Omicho Market on the way to the castle.

A museum to the philosopher who introduced Zen to Western readers, built by Taniguchi Yoshio as three low buildings around a shallow Water Mirror Garden that ripples at set intervals. There is very little to read and almost nothing to look at, deliberately, and people sit in the contemplative space for half an hour. At 310 yen it is the cheapest and the quietest thing on this list.

The third and smallest geisha quarter, pressed between the Asano river and a steep bank, reached over the wooden Naka-no-bashi bridge. Where Higashi Chaya has the shops and the crowds, this one has almost none of either and still has working ochaya behind its lattice. Come at dusk when the lanterns reflect off the water. Historical Site

A villa built in 1863 by the thirteenth Maeda lord for his retired mother, and the most lavish domestic interior in the city: Dutch stained glass, imported pigments, hand-painted panels and a cantilevered veranda with no visible supports looking onto its own garden. It has its own entrance beside Kenrokuen. It closes on Wednesdays, which catches people out because Kenrokuen next door never closes.

Day Trip

Four old hot spring towns spread across the hills south of the city, the best known being Yamanaka with its lacquer workshops and the Kakusenkei gorge walk along the river. This only became a realistic day trip in March 2024, when the shinkansen extension opened Kaga-Onsen station and cut the journey to around 25 minutes. Most guides still describe it as an overnight.

Landmark

A 14 metre timber gate shaped like the two drumheads of a tsuzumi, standing in front of a glass and steel dome built to shelter arriving visitors from the rain the city is known for. It sounds like infrastructure and it is, but it has been named among the world's most beautiful stations and you will pass through it anyway. Go back after dark when the gate is lit.

Historical Site

An 1820 ochaya in Higashi Chaya preserved as it was, with the performance rooms upstairs, the guests' side and the musicians' side still laid out, and the shamisen and drums left in place. Because the district itself is free and open, stepping inside one house is a separate decision, and this is the one worth 500 yen. It is a designated Important Cultural Property and nothing in it has been rebuil (Read More)t for show.

Museum

The national crafts collection moved here from Tokyo in 2020 and was installed in two restored Meiji-era army buildings behind Kenrokuen. Lacquer, ceramics, metalwork, dyed textiles and glass, in a city that still produces most of them. It is recent enough that a lot of guidebooks do not mention it at all, which is why it stays quiet on days when the 21st Century Museum has a queue.
