What is the best time to visit Gangotri?

Gangotri tends to remain cold for the most part of the year; however, the ideal time to visit this place is between April to June and from September to October. Summers in Gangotri is quite pleasant and a perfect season to pay homage at the holy shrine. Monsoons are characterised by heavy rainfall, and it is difficult to travel there during that time. Winters are frigid and not the best time to visit the place.

Summer (April - June)

Winter (December - March)

Winters in Gangotri are very harsh and extreme. The heavy snowfall prohibits the travellers and trekkers from entering the glacier region. Transport and communication facilities come to a standstill, however, Gangotri is charming in November, it does not hamper the scope for adventure sports, such as skating and skiing. The weather gets worse in December to early February as the region experiences heavy snowstorms. The cold climate is a big blow to transportation, and thus on tourism as a whole.
