What is the best time to visit Rishikesh?

The weather is good throughout the year, however Summers from May - June could be a bit warm. Summer is the peak season here as the white water rafting is most active during these months. It is also a favourite time because the yoga festival falls in March. Rishikesh is best visited during the winter season too, with a mild cold and crisp in the air making this pristine gateway of Himalayas be at it's best.

Rishikesh in Summer (March-May)

Weather during the summer season in Rishikesh is pretty hot and humid ranging between 15 degrees to 40-degree Celcius. While the early summers are perfect for adventure sports and camping, the hot weather in April- May does no good. The cold of winter starts to wane out from March, and the heat keeps rising till the monsoon hits the valley. June has worst heat and humidity with scattered rainfalls. Since Rishikesh is the Yoga capital of the world, the festival witnesses a mass gathering of yogis and yoga enthusiasts from around the globe. Water rafting which is a leading adventure sport here, is best experienced during this season.

With temperatures between 20° C and 6° C, winters are the best time in Rishikesh to enjoy the natural beauty and engage in adventure activities especially rock climbing. The weather is pleasant throughout with January being the coldest month. However, it is not as severe as you expect a hilly town to be. You'll need to put on layers of clothing if you wish to trek over the snow-clad peaks. The best thing about winter is the sky and mist over the mountain range which is a sight to behold.

The monsoon season in Rishikesh comes with a lot of festivals like Savan. There is a rush of tourists in this season due to the religious events. However, visiting Rishikesh during July to September might not be ideal. August being the wettest month receives the heaviest rainfall when water sports activities like rafting remain closed. Moreover, it is also not a good time for trekking or hiking as the excessive rainfall often causes landslides, leading to road blockages.
