  1. Seek Blessings at the Various Places of Worship

    Virajpet has several places of worship that are not restricted to just temples alone and are also not visited by pilgrims only but also by tourists alike. Although the most popular temples in the place are Shiva Temple and Ayappa Temple, both of which are situated near Malethirike hill; there is also a strikingly beautiful 220 years old church - St. Anne’s Church which boasts of gorgeous architecture. Historical Importance of Virajpet

Founded in 1792, the tiny town of Virajpet is named after its ruler and founder- Dodda Virarajendra and is an abbreviated form of Virarajendrepet. It is of importance because it was founded to commemorate the alliance of the king with General Robert Abercrombie against the ruler of Mysore Tipu Sultan. Besides, it has been ruled by several dynasties including Kadambas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Rastrakutas, Gangas, Cholas and Vijaynagar Rayas etc., and has several historic places of attractions for the tourists.

How to Reach

The nearest airport to Virajpet is situated in Mangalore which is at a distance of 170 km. From here, you can travel in a public service bus or train to reach the destination. Similarly, the nearest railway station is in Mysore which is 78 km. From Mysore, you can reach Coorg from where there is easy public transport available that can drop you to Virajpet. Alternatively, there is also direct public transport (buses and trains) from Mysore to Virajpet.
