Sankey Tank, Bangalore Overview

Sankey Tank is is a manmade lake, situated in the western part of Bangalore. Spread across an area of 37.5 acres near Vyalikaval, Malleshwaram and Sadashivanagar, it is one of the most popular places to hang out in Bangalore. Sankey Tank is a perfect place for nature lovers who can enjoy stress-free moments in the refreshing and calm surrounding. This large body of water is a source of attraction for not only locals, but also for the tourists coming to Bangalore. The State Forest Department takes care of the lake.

This artificial tank was built in the year 1882 under the administration of Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment. This tank was built in order to cater the water supply demands throughout Bangalore City at that time. It was also called Gandhadhakotikere at that time as the Government Sandalwood Depot was situated near it.

More on Sankey Tank

The Maurya Sankey Boat Club offers guests with a wide variety of boat rides, for example, rowboats, pedal boats and motor boats. One can enjoy boating and drop to and from the island which is situated in the middle of the lake at minimum charges. This boat club is overseen by KSTDC.

The ideal time to visit this beautiful site is during the months of summer due to the cool weather. As Bangalore has a wonderful climate consistently, the tank can be at any time of the year. However, as the tank is a perfect place for sightseeing and open-air activities like boating, it is best to avoid the stormy season while going to the tank.

Apart from boating, this place also offers many recreational options to its people. It includes a beautiful park and a swimming pool at the southern side. The northern side has a Forest Department nursery. One can also find covered walkways that are ideal for jogging early at any time of the day.

This lake is bordered by a scenic garden. The most exciting thing about this lake is that during the winter season the lake is changed over into the settling grounds of a plenty of migratory birds. The tranquil water of the lake and different birds running close-by is an incredible sight!

It is recommended to visit the tank in the evening as one can enjoy the beauty of the sunset. One can also check out the musical fountains (which were a recent addition to Sankey Tank) after dark.

Sankey Tank is easily accessible from within the city. One can travel to the place either by a private vehicle, rent a cab or take the local transportation. Several BMTC buses are also available on that route. The location is well connected through all means of local transport.
