Memorial Wall, Bali Overview

The Memorial Wall in Kuta, Bali commemorates the victims of the October 2002 bombing on Bali which killed 88 Australian tourists, 38 Indonesians and 27 Britons, among several others. A Wall of Names pays tribute to these victims, and people from all over the world come here to pay their respects.

Memorial Wall is a unique attraction in Kuta that marks a tragic incident in the history of Bali. Three bomb blasts in the region on the 12th of October shook the world and took the lives of 202 people. The memorial wall is a permanent reminder of the attack. It is situated at the exact location where one of the blasts happened (Paddy's Pub) and bears the names of the victims. The attraction is located at a short distance from Legian.

History of Memorial Wall, Bali

The Memorial Wall in Bali was built as a tribute to the victims of the terror attack in Kuta District of Indonesia. According to authorities, the attack was in retaliation for Bali’s and America’s support on the war on terror and Australia’s involvement in the liberation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.  On 12th October 2002, three bombs were detonated in Kuta destroying life and property. One of them was a suicide bomber who carried a bomb in his backpack and walked into Paddy’s Pub, another one was placed in a vehicle and the third was another a suicide bomber. The memorial wall was built soon after and dedicated to the victims of the attack in 2004.

1. Explore The History of the Memorial Wall: The Memorial Wall in Bali has a large carved rock surrounded by curved stairs with pots of sapling sitting on them. In spite of the past, one can notice a sense of calmness at this attraction. In the centre of the carved rock is a plaque that bears the names of the people who perished in the attack. Flags of the counties the victims belonged to are also flanked around the wall. If one wishes to, they can leave flowers and offerings on the steps.

2. Explore the Kuta Karnival: From October 2019, every year, the Kuta Karnival will be held to celebrate life. People can enjoy some good food, music, carnivals and entertainment as part of this celebration.

Memorial Wall is located about 43 kilometres to the south of Bali in the central region of Kuta district. If travellers are exploring this region, they can easily walk to the attraction via Jl. Legian. The roadways connect the entire district. One can take a taxi, a local bus or just walk to the attraction.
