History of Al Jahili Fort

In the 19th century, the ruler at the time, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Khalifa moved to Al Ain from Abu Dhabi to escape the harsh humid climate of the coast. He was the leader of the Bani Yas Tribe and ordered to build the Al Jahili Fort from where he would control the tribespeople in the area.

With construction beginning in 1891, the fort was finally completed in 1898. After Sheikh Zayed died, his eldest son decided to remain ruling Al Ain and continued to live at the fort. Without much information on what happened, the fort was abandoned later.

In the 1950s, the British occupied the fort and made it their central headquarters while they added more structures to the enclosure. This was occupied by the British till 1970.
