Zayed Centre, Abu Dhabi Overview

The Zayed Centre in Abu Dhabi was built as a tribute to the life of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, also fondly known as the ‘Father of the Nation’. Set in old Emirati villas in Abu Dhabi, the museum has, on display, a number of artefacts and personal memorabilia from his life, including his cherished blue Mercedes.

Who was Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan?

The Zayed Centre was established to document the life of the late Sheikh Zayed, whose role was crucial in shaping the formation of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan served as Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 1966 and the first President of the United Arab Emirates since its formation in 1971. He tried to provide education and employment to all Emiratis. He also took initiative for issues such as preservation of environment and wildlife, and relief and rehabilitation services to those less fortunate, through bodies such as Red Crescent Society and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

What to See at Zayed Centre

In the Zayed Centre, one can see a collection of artefacts from his life, from personal moments in his life to meetings with important leaders from around the world. One of the highlights of the collection is his four beloved vintage cars, which he often drove around the city without bodyguards present. Some of his personal items, including hunting rifles, a cologne bottle and a falcon clock, are also available for visitors to see. The display also includes souvenirs and gifts that he received from all over the world, such as stuffed lions and cheetahs. On the walls, one can see photographs of Sheikh Zayed meeting with different heads of states from around the world.

The Zayed Centre also has 3 smaller galleries dedicated to:

1. Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations: This features a large timeline spread over the walls with the important dates and events.

2. Emirates Post: One can see a large collection of stamps and envelopes from Abu Dhabi.

3. Abu Dhabi Police: This room display of a number of uniforms worn by members of the Police Department over the years, and various tools used by them.

How To Reach Zayed Centre

The Zayed Centre is located at Al Quffal Street, near the Al Bateen Warf in Abu Dhabi. One can get here by car or by taxi.
