Al Bahar Towers, Abu Dhabi Overview

The Al Bahar Towers is an architectural marvel situated at the crossing of Al Salaam Street and Al Saada in Abu Dhabi. As a tribute to the traditional Arab architecture, the geometric patterns fitted on the towers keep on changing their positions as the sun moves.

While one of the towers is the head office of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC), the other tower is the Al Hilal Bank’s headquarter. Each of the Al Bahar towers has the capacity to accommodate 1100 employees and have a parking capacity of 804 cars. What’s interesting is that these towers also house sky gardens in its southern wing. Some of the other facilities of this highly creative design concept are restaurants, auditoriums and prayer rooms that are accessible to VIPs, staff members and the public.

The Al Bahr Towers are an architectural gem, both in terms of the innovative concept, and execution of the design. The architects of these towers took the issue of solar gain seriously enough to come with a distinctive solution wherein they have a unique protective layer or wall of more than 2000 glass (PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene) elements which automatically open and close based on the brightness of the sun on any day.

Designed by Aedas Architects, Al Bahar Towers showcase the cultural elements from the ‘mashrabiya’ which can be described as a conventional Islamic latticework or shading commonly seen in the windows that lie on the street side. The triangular geometric patterns wear a coat of fiberglass and with the help of smart programming, open-close according to the movement of the sun. As soon as the sun sets, the screens also close for the day.

Some of the nearest bus stations near the Al Bahr Towers are Sultan Bin Zayed St / Shakhbout Bin Sultan St which is 909 meters away and will take an approximate 12 minutes to walk and Sultan Bin Zayed St / Abu Dhabi Men's College which is 989 meters away and can be covered in 13 minutes.
