Best Time To Visit Vienna

April, May and September, October are the shoulder months in Vienna. The weather is pleasant and the crowd is less during these months. Also, as these months neither falls in the peak or the offseasons, the hotels and airfare prices are absolutely budget friendly and you needn’t worry about the long lines at the public places either! October is a good time to experience the colourful autumn foliage.

Winter months of December and January are considered to be the low season in Vienna. The city is extremely cold during these months, however, it looks like a fairy-tale too! So, in case you do not have a problem with the chills in the air, winter can be your preferred time for vacationing in Vienna. The hotels are less expensive during this time and also the airfares are cheaper. The streets are less crowded and hence, the tourist attractions are free from busy lines.

Vienna looks the prettiest in the winter season. The weather is chilly as the temperature often drops down to -4°C. There’s also snowfall during late-December and January. Austrians celebrate Christmas on the Christmas Eve with their families, at home, and hence, if you are there during this time, you find the streets empty and most of the restaurants closed. The charming old-world streets, the beautiful imperial architecture and the city’s exquisite coffee culture will make you overwhelmed during your stay there. Also, if you stay until the New Years, you will be able to be a part of the largest street party with fireworks in midnight in the City Hall Square and the Prater.

The Opera Ball is another great thing to experience in Vienna in February. It’s basically a part of the Vienna Fasching (Carnival) celebrations and is held at the State Opera House. Vienna Accordion Festival is also quite a thing for music lovers around the globe. It stages folk, classical and tango concerts all over the city. March, April and May are the spring months in Vienna. March is the official end of the winter season, however, the nights are still cold in the early-March and the temperature remains at 0 degrees Celsius often. The late-March temperature gets up to 13-14 degrees Celsius and March is often considered to be the mixed bag of rain, snow and sunshine. April and May are pretty comfortable weather-wise in Vienna. The days are long and sunny, however, you will still need a jacket in your luggage if you are travelling there during these months.

Be a part of the Vienna City Marathon in April and get your dose of healthy living even when you are on a holiday. Buy some traditional arts and crafts from the Easter Markets in every nook and corner of the city. Be a part of the four-day-long annual Styrian Spring Festival and get amazed by their local dance forms, music and food. If you love food, then you must not miss the Genuss Food Festival that goes on for three days in May. It is the country’s biggest food carnival and comprises of more than 190 food stalls.

The autumn months of September, October and November are comfortable, weather-wise, and not that crowded. The temperature average is 14°C and there’s less sunshine with shorter days. Late-October and November are a bit cold as the winter season gets nearer. Autumn is beautiful in Vienna as the trees shed their leaves. The city literally gets coloured in gold and copper. So, a visit to one of the numerous parks in Vienna during this time is a must-do activity.
