Sonamarg is a town in Jammu and Kashmir, with snow-laden fields, surrounded by majestic glaciers and serene lakes which casts subtle spells on the visitors. Local cuisine includes Syoon Olav (Meat with Potatoes cooked in spicy gravy), Marcha-Wangan korma, Nadir-Haaq/Gogji/Monji (lotus stems cooked with Spinach or Radish), Muj Gaad (Fish with Radish), Modur Pulaav (Sweet Pulao, usually as a dessert), Kaanti (lamb pieces in red hot gravy, usually eaten as a snack and not part of the main course) and Matschgand (minced lamb meatballs in spicy red gravy).

How To Reach Sonamarg

Situated in the Himalayas, Sonamarg does not have a railway station or an airport. The nearest railway station is at Udhampur (250 km), and Jammu railway station is also nearby which is around 300 km. Jammu station is well connected by rail with the rest of the India. From Jammu or Udhampur, you can take a cab or a bus to reach Sonamarg. The nearest airport is in Srinagar (70 km), and taxis or buses are readily available to take one to Sonamarg. However, Sonamarg is mostly inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

- If going in the chilly months, do not forget to carry all your woolens. Also, carry a map of the area as the area can be confusing and you might lose track.
