- If going in the chilly months, do not forget to carry all your woolens. Also, carry a map of the area as the area can be confusing and you might lose track.

  What's Great?

Beautiful landscapes which are untouched by commercialization. Pleasant weather as compared to other parts of the country. A perfect place for adrenaline junkies. Delectable Kashmiri cuisine.

  What's not so Great?

Sudden terrorist attacks and curfews in the valleys may scare you. So, precaution has to be taken.

Whitewater River Rafting: Sonamarg holds a rafting competition every year and boosts the competitive spirits of people. Indus river of Sonamarg is famous for whitewater river rafting. The river is surrounded by hills on the either sides. Under proper guidance, even a novice can enjoy the pleasure of rafting in Sonamarg.
Camping: Sonamarg is the perfect place for camping under the starry nights. You can set up your camp on the bank of a river and have a bonfire. Baltal Valley, in particular, is an ideal place in to enjoy camping. It is surrounded by thick forests and magnificent landscapes.
Trekking: You can enjoy short as well long treks in Sonamarg. A trek to Vishansar, Krishnasar, Gangabal, Satsar and Gadsar lake can be undertaken by experienced trekkers. Sonamarg's cusine is not very diverse but derives most popular delicacies from a typical Kashmiri cuisine. Local cuisine includes Syoon Olav (Meat with Potatoes cooked in spicy gravy), Marcha-Wangan korma, Nadir-Haaq/Gogji/Monji (lotus stems cooked with Spinach or Radish), Muj Gaad (Fish with Radish), Modur Pulaav (Sweet Pulao, usually as a dessert), Kaanti (lamb pieces in red hot gravy, usually eaten as a snack and not part of the main course) and Matschgand (minced lamb meatballs in spicy red gravy).
