Guangzhou's history can be traced back to 1100 BC - the Nanwucheng settlement. Called Panyu during the Qin empire, it was later made part of the Han Empire. This place was also the hotbed for a series of failed revolts between 1895-1911. From the 1980s Guangzhou began to expand and has now become one of the most important cities of China.
