Dehu, Pune Overview

Dehu Gatha temple is one of the largest temples and is located near Pune. At the entrance of the temple lies the statue of Sant Tukaram Maharaj. What attracts people the most are the carvings of all Gathas ie legends/storis of Sant Tukaram on the walls of the temple which are very easy to read. It is said that one must read at least 3 Gathas on visiting the temple. The temple is located on Indrayani River's bank. Also, there is a place on the river where these Gathas floats which should not be missed out.

Dehu is a spiritual place wherein Saint Tukaram was born. It is a place of the pilgrims. The temple of Saint Tukaram was built in Dehu in 1723. It is said that the home where he used to reside is still in existence. One of the main attractions of Dehu is palakhi (Palanquin) procession in the Hindu month of ashadh. Every year during this procession, numerous people participate and remember and sing the Gathas of Saint Tukaram. The place is highly revered for the followers of Saint Tukaram. A garden has also been dedicated to Tukaram's wife, and rock has been built to commemorate his 13 days fast.

Dehu has some attractions which is why it is so often visited by tourists from all over the country. However, amongst these attractions, the commemorative of Saint Tukaram is the most famous. It is visited by people frequently who pay tribute to the literary works of the great poet. The temple on the bank of the Indrayani River was constructed by the youngest son of Saint Tukaram- Narayanbaba. The prime deity in the temple is Lord Pandurang.

Tips For Visiting Dehu

1. It is advisable to keep the footwear outside the temple before entering. Also, one must carry all the much-needed items on the trip. No pets are allowed inside the temple.

2. Also, to avoid the scorching heat, it is much better to go for darshan in the evenings or to avoid long queues, early in the morning.

How To Reach Dehu

Buses frequently run between Swargate station and Dehu and so it is very easy to reach Dehu. Dehu lies at a distance of 25 km from Pune, and one can easily hire a cab or a bus from there to reach the temple.
