Australian Camp, Pokhara Overview
Australian Camp is a ridge clearing at 2,045 metres, about three kilometres west of Dhampus village and reached from Pokhara by a short highway drive plus a climb on foot. The payoff at the top is an unbroken northern horizon: Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and the fishtail summit of Machhapuchhre. Sarangkot gives Pokhara a closer sunrise ridge, but this one stands higher and further west, which is why Dhaulagiri joins the line rather than staying hidden behind foothills.
Most visitors walk up from the highway roadhead west of Pokhara and return the same day. The ridge carries more than thirty teahouses and homestays, so staying the night is straightforward and puts you in position before first light, when the peaks colour and the valley below is still under cloud. The trail continues east along the ridge to Dhampus, roughly three kilometres away, which makes an easy loop, and west towards Pothana for anyone heading on to Mardi Himal or the Annapurna trails. Views are most reliable outside the summer monsoon months.
