The facility was originally built to shelter invalides (disabled war veterans). Even today a portion of the building serves as a veterans' residence and hospital.
The Äglise du Dome, with its sparkling golden dome, is one of the finest religious edifices. It served as an inspiration for the US Capitol building. This is also the eternal home of Napoleon Bonaparte, after his tomb was moved from the island of St. Helena. The emperor's remains lie protected by at least six coffins, one set inside the next - more like a Russian Doll. The Mus_e de l'Arm_e, containing the largest collection on the history of the French military, is also here. The Chapelle is surrounded by the lush green Esplanade des Invalides lawns, a favourite spot for leisure.
