Gunkanjima (Hashima Island), Nagasaki Overview
An abandoned coal-mining island of concrete apartment blocks, packed at its peak with the densest population on earth and empty since 1974. Boats run from Nagasaki Port. Landing is legally barred when wind exceeds 5 m/s, waves 0.5 m or visibility drops to 500 m, so it cancels often. The boat still sails and circles the island. Budget a spare day, book early in your stay, and note there is a separate 650 yen city fee if you land.
