Shivaji Park, Mumbai Overview

Situated in Dadar, Mumbai, Shivaji Park is one of the largest parks in the city. Besides the very famous massive statue of Shivaji, the park also houses an enormous cricket ground which hosts local cricket and football matches.

Location and How to Reach

Shivaji Park is located at Keluskar Marg, Dadar West in Mumbai. It is 15 kilometres away from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, 12 kilometres away from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station and 8.5 kilometres away from the MSRTC Mumbai Central Bus Stand. One can choose the most convenient mode of transport to reach Mumbai. To commute within the city, they have choices from auto rickshaws for short distances, taxis, local trains for longer distances and city buses for longer and shorter stretches.

Travellers flying in can easily take a cab to reach Shivaji Park via Sahar Indian Oil Road – NH 48/ Western Express Highway – Kherwadi Flyover – S V Road – T H Kataria Marg – Cadell Road. They can also head to Santacruz Railway Station (approximately 7 kilometres away from the airport) to take a local train heading to Dadar Railway Station which is the closest railway junction located about 3 kilometres away from the attraction.

From Dadar Railway Station, the route that leads to Shivaji Park goes via Dadasaheb Phalke Road – Swami Narayan Chowk – Sir Bhalchandra Marg – Tilak Bridge – N C Kelkar Road – Keluskar Marg - Dr Madhukar B Rout Marg. Mumbai’s connectivity by rail makes travelling in local trains a time-saving option. Plus, every station in Mumbai has trains operating and connecting all the other city railway stations. So, travellers can easily find local trains heading to Dadar Railway Station every 15 to 30 minutes.

Another option for travellers is to reach the attraction by the roadways. The state transport buses usually halt at the MSRTC Mumbai Central Bus Stand. From there, if one wants to take a local train, they can head to the Mumbai Central Railway Station which is just half a kilometre away and has an ample number of local trains connecting Dadar Railway Station. If they want to take the roadways instead, they can hire a cab/ board a city bus.  

The route to the attraction from MSRTC Mumbai Central Bus Stand goes via Dr A K Hameed Chowk – Dr. Anand Rao Nair Road – Keshavrao Khadye Marg – Dr. E Moses Road – Senapati Bapat Marg – Gokhale Road – Elphinstone Road – Gokhale Road – L J Road - Keluskar Marg – Sangeetkar C Ramachandra Chowk/ Cadell Road. There are two more routes that lead to Shivaji Park from the Bus Stand – the Dr Annie Besant Road – A G Khan Road route (10.5 kilometres) and the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg – Bharatmata Lalbaug Junction Flyover route (13.5 kilometres).

Sports played at Shivaji Park

The most famous and important sport played at Shivaji Park is Cricket. The attraction has eight Cricket Clubs that strive to produce international level cricketers in the country. Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ramakant Desai, Vijay Manjrekar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ashok Wadekar, Sandeep Patil, Vinod Kambli, Chandrakant Pandit etc. are some of the cricketers that were trained at Shivaji Park. The Gymkhana at Shivaji Park has a professional pitch, practice nets and a well-maintained infrastructure for cricket.

Other than Cricket, Shivaji Park also provides set-ups and facilities for other sports like Tennis, Football and indoor games like Cards, Billiards, Table Tennis and Carrom. Each sport has a separate room/ hall with separate arrangements to allow players to focus as well as enjoy the game. They have 3 hard Tennis Courts, one Card Room, a Billiards Room, a Gymnasium, a room for Table Tennis etc. The management also conducts various tournaments for each sport every year.
