Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai Overview

Situated opposite the bus stop in Dharavi, Mumbai, Maharashtra Nature Park is one of the most green spaces in the city. The park is the wonderful reformation of a dumping ground in 1994. The gorgeous park now boasts of more than 12000 trees in the premises.

Things to do

Maharashtra Nature Park expands over an area of 37 acres and is an oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle the city has transformed into. Here, most people visit the park for recreational purposes. They can explore the beautifully landscaped park through the main pathway called 'Shanti Path', amidst lush green lawns and tall, trimmed shrubbery, dense trees canopying the streets etc. The architecture of the park is also noteworthy, although some works of art/ architecture are limited only to a few sections of the park. This green patch extends around River Mithi and has some natural and artificial waterholes/ water bodies within the premises too. Visitors can soak in the cool air, the scenic and serene nature as they explore Maharashtra Nature Park further. They can also indulge in photography along with nature walks here.  

The Park has a wide variety of flora. There are over 580 species of plants found here. They have been grown and cared for in sections of vegetation that people can check out like the Forest Section, the Spice Section, the Vegetable Section, a section for Pam Trees, one for Medicinal Plants, a Vermicompost section and a Nursery. This area is established for educational purposes. Visitors can get to witness a good number of plants belonging to each of these categories. Botanist, Zoologists, Study Groups, Nature Lovers often visit the attraction for they get to see those plant and animal species. Visitors can get entry into any of these sections where they can study and capture these species in photographs for reference. Interested ones may also head to the nursery to buy a few saplings for themselves at affordable rates. They can get more insights into how to care for their plants.

The forest area of Maharashtra Nature Park in itself is home to a number of animals, birds, reptiles etc. Visitors can commonly spot the Egret, kingfishers, sparrows, caterpillars, butterflies dragonflies, lizards, chameleons, cobra and other serpents. This place is especially famous for a variety of Butterflies thriving at the Maharashtra Nature Park. There are over 78 species of colourful butterflies found here like the Common/ Lemon Emigrant Butterfly, Common Grass Yellow Butterfly or the Eurema Hecabe, Common Caster or the Orange Butterfly, the Common Baron, Common Tiger, Common/ Malayan Wanderer, Chocolate Soldier etc. Therefore, visitors can easily spot a large number of caterpillars on the trees at the Maharashtra Nature Park.

How To Reach Maharashtra Nature Park

Maharashtra Nature Park is located in Dharavi, Mumbai, near the Dharavi Bus Depot. It is about 2.5 kilometres away from the Sion Railway Station which is also the closest railway station to the attraction. So, local trains can be boarded from any railway junction in the city to reach Sion and from there, travellers can take the roadway to reach the attraction. The route to follow from Sion Railway Station goes via Swami Shree Vallabhdas Marg/ Road Number 24 – SMT. Kokilaben Oza Marg – Babasaheb Deshpande Chowk/ NH 48 – Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg – Dharavi Bus Depot Road. Public transportation is quite big in Mumbai. So, city buses, taxis, Ola and Uber Cabs can conveniently be used to reach the attraction.

Mumbai has an expansive network of state and national highways that connects different parts of the city and also the city to different parts of the state. State transport buses can also be used to reach Mumbai. Travellers can disembark at MSRTC Mumbai Central Bus Stand (16 kilometres away from the Nature Park) or at Dharavi Bus Depot. Again, they can choose between local trains or the roadways to reach the attraction. If they want a faster mode of transport, heading to the Mumbai Central railway station is recommended for they can find a local train heading to Sion every 30 to 40 minutes. If they want to take the roadways instead from the MSRTC Mumbai Central Bus Stand, they can take the route via Dr. Anand Rao Nair Road – Lala Lajpat Rai Marg – Bandra Worli Sea Link – NH 48 – Dharavi Bus Depot Road.  

The Mumbai Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, also connects most major cities in the country. Outstation travellers, wanting to take a flight to Mumbai, can easily do so. From the airport, they can then hire a cab or board a bus that takes them directly to Dharavi Bus Depot. Heading to Santacruz Railway Station can also be an option for those who would like to take a local train. Santacruz Railway Junction is located about 7 kilometres away from the airport. Otherwise, from the airport, one needs to follow the route via Sahar Road – Western Express Highway/ NH 48 – Ganpat Tapse Chowk on NH 48 – Dharavi Bus Depot Road. This route stretches about 12.5 kilometres.
