Old Kaichi School, Matsumoto Overview
An 1876 school built by local carpenters copying Western buildings they had only seen in pictures, producing an octagonal tower, cherubs over the door and blue-tinted glass. It is the oldest surviving Western-style school building in Japan and a National Treasure. Five minutes from the castle. Grounds work through part of 2026 partly obscures the facade, which is the reason to go.
