Mahibadhoo, Maldives Overview

Located in central Maldives, Mahibadhoo is the capital of Alif Dhaal Atoll. It is one of the country’s smaller islands at 8 hectares and a population of around 2,000 people. Despite this, it remains a beautiful island off the beaten path to visit for water sports opportunities like swimming, diving, snorkelling, canoeing, and surfing.

Mahibadhoo is also a popular spot in the region as one of the few islands with a bank, SIM card stores, and an ATM that accepts foreign cards.

Things To Do

Canoeing: Canoes can be rented for the unique experience of clear-water canoeing where you’ll get to see marine life swimming along beneath you the entire time. This would typically cost around MVR 400.

Snorkelling: Mahibadhoo’s beautiful reef is ideal for snorkelling. For around MVR 280 per person, you can take part in night snorkelling where you’ll get to see the bio-luminescent plankton that is indigenous to these islands. Day snorkelling would be more expensive at around MVR 500 and some guides will let you take part in octopus and crab hunting.

Diving: The Maldives is a popular international diving spot and Mahibadhoo is no different. The island has only a handful of diving companies, most popularly Maldives Diving Loabi that is a catamaran. For around MVR 600, you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful clear waters and see barracuda, reef sharks, eagles rays, and plenty of colourful fish.

Island Hopping: Another attraction here is remote island hopping. With beautiful offerings like Alicoi and Omadhoo where no construction or building is allowed, you’ll get to enjoy the ‘private island’ experience. Be sure to plan ahead to bring all necessary equipment and supplies as these islands have no facilities. These are excellent day-trips for family picnics and camping.
