Holy House of Mercy, Macau Overview

The Holy House of Mercy was built by the first Bishop of Macau and is located in Senado Square. The exterior is painted a tranquil white, and this makes it the simplest yet the most elegant looking building of all the monuments in the square. The museum on the second floor is the main attraction for visitors.

It contains items of donated sacrificial offerings including a portrait of Sacred Heart of Jesus, ivory sculpture of Madonna, a statue of Jesus on the Cross and some porcelain. A manual script written in 1662 citing the Regulations of Macau's Holy House of Mercy is the most valuable religious relic which is housed there.

The skull of its founder and a funerary cross are also items of importance and value in the museum. The building earlier served as a first western-style medical clinic and then as other social welfare structures and continues to do so. The orphanage and old ladies home are functional to date. The basement of the building is the Notary office of the Macau government.
