National Zoo of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Overview

The National Zoo of Malaysia, commonly known as Zoo Negara, is spread over more than 100 acres and is home to more than 476 wildlife species. The main highlight of this zoo is Malaysia’s famous giant pandas: Xing Xing and Liang Liang.

Visitors are free to stroll through the park and get a firsthand experience of the concept of an open zoo. There are several Banyan trees at Zoo Negara, with one gigantic banyan tree that is supposedly the oldest in Malaysia.

Exhibits at Zoo Negara

The exhibits at the National Zoo are present in a replicate of their natural habitat; this allows visitors and animals to get a more natural experience. There is also a scenic lake present that houses several flamingos in the zoo.

There are more than 16 exhibits at the zoo, and each one of them offers something new to its visitors. Some of the popular exhibits are:

Butterfly Garden is filled with a variety of butterfly species. It allows visitors to get a closer look at butterflies and makes for a great photography spot.
Reptile House has both indoor and outdoor exhibits and also features the largest crocodile in the world – The Saltwater Crocodile. It also houses different species of crocodiles from freshwater crocs to African dwarf crocodiles. It also features snakes from various parts of the world, including the green anaconda, the heaviest snake in the world. Turtle enthusiasts will also like the place as there are turtles exhibits as well.
Birds Aviary is home to more than 100 species of birds and is indeed a must visit exhibit at Zoo Negara. Visitors can find flamingos and Milky Storks in their natural habitat.
Malaysian Elephants is home to three giant Malaysian Elephants. They are Siti and Sibol, both females while Teriang is a male. All of them were found in different locations in Malaysia and have been part of the zoo since a very young age. These giant mammals are very gentle and allow visitors to get close to them.
Children’s World is a place for the young children whose minds can roam freely in this exhibit of the park. Children are allowed to pet horses, deer, and goats while learning about individual animals. The newest part of the Children’s world is the Cave, which allows children to explore areifacts and another primitive style of living.

Carry necessary cash for the tickets, as the ticket counter generally only accepts cash

How to Reach Zoo Negara

LRT: Take the Kelana Jaya Line and get off at Wangsa Maju Station, from there take a taxi to the zoo which is approximately six minutes away.

Bus: The Rapid KL buses number 253 and 220 from Putra LRT Station and Lebuh Ampang KL stop at Wangsamaju respectively. From there, take a taxi to the Negara Zoo, which is approximately 9 minutes away.

Tram: There is a tram route that has eight stops.
Fees for the tram are Adults – RM 8, Children RM 5

There is paid parking available in front of the zoo.
