Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa Overview
The largest of Kanazawa's three surviving geisha quarters, a grid of two-storey wooden houses with fine slatted lattice fronts, ochre walls and stone paving. It is free and open, so you can walk it at any hour, and it is at its best in the hour before dusk when the lanterns come on and the day tour groups have gone. Gold leaf workshops and tea houses fill most of the frontages now.
