Nagamachi Samurai District, Kanazawa Overview
Narrow lanes of earthen walls where the Maeda clan's retainers lived, with water channels running alongside and the walls wrapped in straw mats through winter to stop them cracking. The restored Nomura family residence partway along is the one interior open to visitors and holds a small pond garden. This is the other side of the city from the chaya quarters: no shops, no lanterns, just walls and quiet.
