More about Best Time to Travel to Jammu

Jammu in Summer (April - June)

March to June is the spring-summer season in Jammu. One might assume the city to be cold throughout the year because of its location in the state of Kashmir, but Jammu is very hot during summer. March is still mildly pleasant, with temperature in the 20s, but do not expect any reminiscent chill from April onwards. In May-June, expect the mercury to rise above the 40s on a regular basis, with 45° being very common temperature during the day. However, the warmth means there will be lush green landscapes and the flowering plants in full bloom throughout the season.

Not many people visit during the summer here, as they throng towards Srinagar and Gulmarg areas. However, April sees one of the most significant cultural festivals that Jammu celebrates, which is Baisakhi - the Hindu and Sikh New Year. The famous and much-revered Amarnath Yatra also starts from late May to June, for which there is a crowd of the pilgrims who stop here before moving further.

Jammu in Monsoon (July - September)

From July to September, Jammu receives enough rainfall to bring respite from the summer heat and wash away the dust. It is still hot and humid, but the constant rainfall brings a little bit of relief. But as one can guess, it is not the ideal time for a vacation to Jammu. Tourist activities take a pause during monsoon, so do pilgrimage journeys. There is always a risk of vehicular disruption because of landslides or other mishaps, which is why it is best not to risk the visit during this time. However, the rain does transform the city and everything looks pristine and perfect.

Jammu in Winter (October - March)

Temperature begins to drop in October, and winter finally begins in November. The capital also shifts back to Jammu from November as it starts to freeze up there in Srinagar. This season sees the most number of tourists, taking up every bit of space in the city. If you want the accommodation of your choice, it is better to book it well in advance for this period. Some places like Patni Top receives snowfall, otherwise winters in Jammu are charmingly crisp throughout the season. End of December and January are the coldest, with the lowest going below 4°C on some days, and usually stays between 8°-16°. Subzero is not usual, so you need not to worry about extreme cold. Carrying a couple of layers of warm clothings is good enough, unless you cope bad with cold. Adventure sports like trekking, hiking and usual sightseeing is at their peak during this time, and Lohri - yet another favourite Kashmiri festival that you might want to witness, is held in January.
