Teo Chew Temple, Houston Overview

Situated in southwest Houston, Teo Chew Temple is a Vietnamese Buddhist Temple with fancy rooftops and huge chambers. Teo Chew Temple has an elaborate fountain that has 12 zodiac animals carved on the marble base. Legend has it that if you toss a coin in the fountain, your wish is likely to come true. Above the fountain is the statue of Quan Am, the Chinese Goddess who is considered to be an equivalent to Queen Mary.

The compound has red picnic tables with open-air gazebos and stone lions that symbolise protection. The temple lays emphasis on ancestral worship and accepts gifts of food. In one building, people pray to 14 different Gods. In the other building, people conduct ancestral worship as there are urns and memorials of their deceased loved ones. Here, they pay homage, offer flowers and incense. With bright red and golden hues that symbolise power and prosperity, Teo Chew Temple is something one shouldn’t miss.
