Murray House, Hong Kong Overview

Located in Stanley, Murray House is an iconic Victorian-style building in Hong Kong. This 160-year-old three-storey colonial building offers excellent dining opportunities with splendid views of the sea along with shopping opportunities. The building has been built with a classical architecture and is worth a glance.

Murray House is the most historic building which was originally constructed in Central in the year 1844 and was relocated to Stanley waterfront in the early 2000s. Bookstores, home furnishing outlets, beauty and care centres and regular grocery stores are also present in Murray House.

Architecture of Murray House

Murray House, one of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong was designed and constructed by Major Aldrich and Lieutenant Collinson of the Royal Engineers. The building has been constructed in the classical style with heavy stone walls at the bottom and light weighing Ionic and Doric columns on the subsequent floors to ensure good ventilation. Keeping in mind the subtropical weather of Hong Kong, a gallery is also attached to all the floors.

Historical Significance

Murray House was constructed in 1844 at the time of British rule as an office quarter for Murray Barracks and was entitled after Sir George Murray. The building played the role of the command centre of the Japanese military during its Japanese operation and was also the place where many Chinese were executed. Post the Second World War, the building was used as a government office for some years. The place where Murray House stood was emptied for the construction of Bank of China Tower in 1982 and the building was moved to Stanley and reopened in the year 2002. Earlier listed as a Grade I building, it lost its prestige on being transferred as it did not come up to match the international standards.

Bus: Bus number 6 can be boarded from Central Exchange Square to Stanley Prison, bus number 6A from Central Exchange Square to Stanley Fort, bus number 6X from Central Exchange Square to Stanley Prison, bus number 14 to Stanley Fort, bus number 63 from North Point Ferry Pier to Stanley Prison, bus number 65 from North Point Pier to Stanley Road, bus number 66 from Central Exchange Square to Ma Hang Village, bus number 73 from Cyberport to Stanley Village, bus number 260 from Central Exchange Square to Stanley Village, bus number 314 from Siu Sai Wan to Stanley Village and bus number 973 from Tsim Sha Tsui East to Stanley Road.

Minibus: For minibus stops, bus number 16M can be boarded from Chung Hom Kok to MTR Chai Wan Station, bus number 16X from Stanley to MTR Chai Wan Station, bus number 40 from Stanley Village Road to Stanley Estate and bus number 52 from Stanley to Shek Pai Wan Pit.

MTR: MTR can be taken to MTR Hong Kong Station (Exit D) or MTR Causeway Bay Station (Exit F1).

Ferry: A ferry can be taken from Po Toi Island to either Aberdeen or to Stanley on weekends.

Car: Parking facility is available at Murray House at a charge of HKD 23 on regular days and HKD 41 on weekends and public holidays.
