Dragon’s Back, Hong Kong Overview

The Dragon’s Back is a ridge in southeastern Hong Kong Island between Wam Cham Shan and Shek O Peak. This stunning hiking trail is one of the most popular hikes in Hong Kong. Be amazed by its scenic view of the Hong Kong Island and the trail that ends at a beautiful Big Wave Bay.

The Dragon’s Back trail is 7 kms long, which takes between 2-3 hours. It is a part of the Hong Kong Trail which is 50 km long. 20 minutes into the hike you reach a scenic spot overlooking the mesmerizing beauty and scenery of Shek O Beach in the East and the splendid Dragon’s Back in the North-West. From the top of Dragon's Back, you can witness the breath-taking beauty of Shek O Beach, Big Wave Bay Beach, and the Shek O Golf Course.

Difficulty Level

The Dragon's Back Hike is pretty easy. The only hard part is ascending the 250 steps at the beginning of the hike. Other than that, it is basically flat and then rolling up and down once you have hit the Dragon’s Back section.

Dragon’s Back to Shek O
The first route involves taking a loop back to the bus, Bus no.9. This loop is around 5 kms long, and will take around 2 hours to complete. Return to the bus stop, and continue to Shek O Beach.
Board the Bus No.9 again and it will take you to Shek O Beach.

The second route involves continuing the hike, and ending it at Big Wave Bay. As the name implies, Big Wave Beach is a popular spot for surfers.This route is 8 kms long and takes around 2.5 hours to complete the hike. It is more of a stroll on a flat surface, followed by descent into Big Wave Bay.

Things to Carry

1. Bring water, especially if hiking during hotter months
2. Bring some food along as it is never a bad idea to carry some snacks along, especially if the hike is 2-3 hours long
3. Wear walking shoes or trainers

How To Reach Dragon's Back

The starting point of Dragon’s Back is located at To Tai Wan. The easiest ways to get there is, to take the Island Line MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station. Take the exit A3 and look for Bus No.9 at the Shau Kei Wan Terminus to To Tei Wan, Dragon’s Back. On reaching, follow the path that leads up the hill to Dragon’s Back Hike.
