Central-Mid-Levels Escalators, Hong Kong Overview

The Central-Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system is the world’s largest outdoor covered escalator system. Covering a distance of 800 meters and traversing to an elevation of 135 meters, it provides a link between the Central and Mid Levels districts of Hong Kong.

The Mid-Levels Escalator system is segmented into 20 escalators with 14 entrances and exits which means that visitors can hop on and off when and wherever they fancy to enjoy the markets, restaurants and other stores which run through the entire route. Moreover, this escalator system holds a legendary value as it has been the filming location of several pop culture films including ‘The Dark Knight’. While riding the complete length of the escalator system takes about 25 minutes, the kind of experience it has on offer is unparalleled.

Hong Kong is home to quite a lot of steep and hilly terrain which makes the Central-Mid-Levels Escalators a blessing for the travellers. The escalators begin at 100 Queens Road, Central travelling their way up through several other streets.

The first section of the escalator system makes a stop at Wellington Street which houses the nightlife hub of Hong Kong, Lan Kwai Fong - a paradise for party lovers with tonnes of clubs, bars and restaurants. Travelling upwards the escalator, one comes across Lyndhurst Terrace which is Hong Kong’s oldest market. The next stop from Lyndhurst Terrace, Hollywood Road is famous for ‘Possession Street’ where the possession of Hong Kong by the British was marked. Adding to the significance of Possession Street are the antique shops, art galleries and museums at this location. The escalators terminate at Conduit Road in Mid-Levels.

How To Reach Central-Mid-Levels Escalators

The starting point of Mid-Levels escalator system is at 100 Queens Road, Central which is at a junction with Cochrane Street. To get to the escalators, one can take the Exit D2 from the Central station on Hong Kong’s Tsuen Wan line. A 6-minute walk from the station will get you to your destination. It is also possible to reach this destination by taking the Trams and dismounting at the Hang Seng Bank HQ station and walking for 2 minutes.
