Chandigarh to Dehradun

The Routes That Can Be Taken

Route 1: Via Ambala to Jasmour to Saharanpur

Distance: 195 KM
Duration: 4 hours 5 minutes

Road Condition: This is the most common route taken to travel from Chandigarh to Dehradun. NH7 and NH307 are the two major highways that connect on the route for some distance.

Route 2: Via Panchkula to Shahzadpur to Jagadhri to Saharanpur

Distance: 173 KM
Duration: 4 hours

Road condition: NH7 is a well-paved highway however, the roads are not up to the expectations in some parts of this route. 

Route 3: Via Panchkula to Naraingarh to Nahan to Paonta Sahib to Dehradun to Rishikesh  

Distance: 187 KM
Duration: 4 hours 10 minutes

Road condition: You travel majorly on NH 72. After Panchkula, Kala Amb is the entry landmark into the state of Himachal Pradesh on this route and you exit at Paonta Sahib. Then the road till Dehradun is an hour drive. This route is a mix of plain and hilly terrain which is a bit time consuming but worth a drive. However, the road is in good shape throughout the drive.
 

Tips

If you are taking the Nahan-Paonta Sahib route then make sure you keep buffer time of at least an hour. As the route is very scenic, people tend to take frequent stops while driving to enjoy the landscape.

Do not drive at night, especially on the Nahan-Paonta Sahib route since it is hilly and the truck drivers go full throttle, resulting in unsafe driving.

There are ample buses plying between Chandigarh and Haridwar from morning to evening at different intervals. Once you reach Haridwar, you can hire direct cabs or take state transports to reach Dehradun which is approximately 53 kilometres from Haridwar. The road journey from Chandigarh to Dehradun by bus is quite adventurous where for some parts you travel the plains and then the bus scales the mountain roads. You must keep 5 to 6 hours of time on an average if you decide to travel this way.
