History

Boston Harbor Cruises were founded by Matt Hughes in 1926. In order to provide the fellow people of Boston an escape from the summer heat and experience of the cool breezes of the sea, Matt started his little ferry that took a 30-minute tour from rickety piers to tired old wharves. The ride just cost 10 cents at that time and became very popular, very quickly. It wasn’t too late until other people saw the thriving harbour as a land of opportunity. People started setting up their businesses in the form of restaurants, hotels, and much more.

It didn't take long for Matt Hughes’ Boston Harbor Cruises to soon become the largest operator of private passenger vessels. Commanding a fleet of over 53 ships, the 3rd and 4th generation of the family is still up and running constantly looking for new opportunities and advancements in its 100-year-old business. The company also captains the largest passenger vessel in the United States of America. Apart from rides into the sea, the company provides visitors with whale watches and has a popular ride called Codzilla. It is also the largest maritime employer for the city of Boston.
