History of the Six Flags Amusement Park

The Six Flags Amusement park in New England is one of the most interactive and fun destinations in the state. Six Flags has been entertaining people all over the world for more than 59 years. With more than 26 locations worldwide, Six flags are the biggest amusement park company in the world. The Six Flags New England is the oldest of all the six flag parks.

The park was opened in 1870 under the name Gallup's Grove. Since then after a lot of acquisitions and changed names, the park was finally named Six Flags New England in 2000. Since then the park has gone through numerous renovations and has been added with various innovative and thrilling rides.

During the early years, the amusement park did not have many visitors because everyone who wished to visit the park had to arrive through a steamship. In 1900, the railways extended its line to the riverside , Springfield thus making it easier for people to reach the amusement park and enjoy its rides. Although the park was opened to the public in 1870, it got its first-ever roller coaster, the Giant Dip in 1912. This development was made by Henry J. Perkins who bought the park in 1911.

Later the Park also got a 300-foot long pool which came to be known as Lake Takadip. Under Perkins’ leadership, the amusement park made great advancement, having 3 roller coaster rides by 1928. Even today, Six Flags New England is one of the biggest and most popular amusement destinations in the country, known for thrilling rides and spectacular experiences.
