Chitralada Palace, Bangkok Overview

Chitralada Palace is official residence of His Majesty King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit located within the popular Dusit Palace. Formerly serving as King Chulalongkorn's summer house, this grand structure is carpeted along one square kilometre surrounded by a moat and efficiently guarded by the royal guards. The palace is presently closed to the public and can only be visited from outside.

The regal Chitralada Palace not only serves as the live-in palace of sovereigns, but also encompasses several lakes, a Baroque style fountain at every corner, along with a school and a non-profitable research centre for conducting agricultural research and demonstrations. Contrary to earlier times, not only the children of school staff but any child associated or non-associated to the palace can study in the school today.

History of Chitralada Palace

Bhumibol Adulyadej served Thailand and the Queen of Bankok to the longest of all. He shifted his permanent residence to Chitralada Palace when King Rama VIII dies, who was also Bhumibol's elder brother. The two-storey palace was established under the historical reign of Rama VII who is still cherished for making a research ground for the benefits of the local farmers.

Structure & Highlight of Chitralada Royal Villa

Unlike the royal palaces that you’ve been seeing throughout your life, Chitralada Palace redefines royalty in the simplest ways possible. Adorned by some incredible baroque fountains from the bygone eras at the entrance of the main gate. These fountains surround the palace complex and are literally spellbinding. The one squared-kilometre ground fringed with Italian-designed outer walls of the palace is sheer beauty. The guards stay put with their arms in a complete state of alertness. The interior of the palace is the real surprise when instead of beguiling galleries and ostentatious galore, a large chunk is dedicated to organic farming and a small school. The exclusive Chitralada school was initiated by Rama IX which aimed at providing fundamental training and knowledge to the children of Palace staff and Royal families.

How to Reach

Chitralada Palace is located on the Rama V road of Suan Chitlada in Dusit Bangkok. Situated quite near to the Royal Palace, Chitralada falls before the Royal Palace and can be reached by public buses or private taxi.

Tips

Do your research well before visiting. Don’t get caught into scams. Always remember that the palace is not open for public and if anyone tells you otherwise and asks you to come along, make sure you act smart and save yourself from the scam.
