Pura Maduwe Karang, Bali Overview

Located in Kubutambahan about 12kms from Bali, Pura Maduwe Karang temple is notable for the floral motifs and epic panels carved on its walls. Dedicated to Batara Madang Karang, the god of fertility, the temple features the traditional three courtyards and a split Candi Bentar gateway. A famous carving depicts a man riding a bicycle.

Pura Maduwe Karang is a beautiful temple complex that is dedicated to Gods of Earth and Fertility, which is truly spell bounding with its unique architectural styles, creativity, and originality of its sculptures. The structures present on either side of the entrance steps draw from the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. 

The most unique thing about the temple which makes it interesting to visit is the existence of the reliefs. The most popular relief being one of the people riding the motorbike with the wheels shaped like the lotus. Apart from the relief of people cycling, there are also images of tourists visiting this temple.

History

The historical origin of Pura Maduwe Karang temple traces back to somewhere in 1981 to 1982, where it was discovered by the local government of Bali and Hindu Dharma Institute. However, the temple was known to the people even during the time of the Second World War, where many tourists especially came to visit the temple complex. Etymologically, the term ‘Pura Maduwe Karang' means the owner of the land which was once a settlement of the migrants from the neighboring village.

The temple comprises of three main levels- one which is outside the temple, the central part, and the innermost part which is considered to be the purest places in the whole temple. The temple's walls and interiors have undergone many restorations from time to time which has helped to restore the complex and make it look tall and majestic.

One can take a stroll around the complex relishing at the intricate carvings of the temple and pausing and admiring the tropical gardens.
