Himachal State Museum, Shimla Overview

The Himachal State Museum, at Chaura Maidan in Shimla, holds a collection of wood carvings, bronzes, coins, jewellery, and Pahari-style miniature paintings, along with a library of around 10,000 books and journals. It's best suited to visitors specifically interested in art and regional history rather than a quick sightseeing stop.

The museum also has a doll gallery which has several bride and groom dolls among many others which are admired by all visitors. Some archeological artefacts are also found at the Himachal State Museum which includes stone images from the 8th century. In colonial times, the grand building housed Lord William Beresford, the Military Secretary to the then Viceroy in India. Being occupied by several tenants later, after independence, it housed the government state officials. It was finally converted into a museum on January 26, 1974.
