Phuket Mining Museum, Phuket Overview

The Phuket Mining Museum, an impressive Sino-Portuguese style pink building, gives one an insight into Phuket's rich mining history. Also known as Kathu Mining Museum, this carefully designed structure houses many impressive mining artefacts, one of the star attractions being the scaled model of a mine depicting hundreds of wax figures at work.

Along with rubber and fishing, tin mining is what made Phuket rich and attracted many immigrants from China and other countries. The park outside the Phuket mining museum has many abandoned mining equipment and machine spare parts. Inside, you will find many exhibitions and pictures which recreate tin mines, opium den, living and working conditions of the labourers and a sneak peek into the daily lives of their families. There is also a room full of rocks, technical information and photographs about tin-processing.

How to Reach Phuket Mining Museum

The museum is situated in the hills behind the Loch Palm Golf Club of Kathu and the road to the British International School. Located very remotely, one can never miss the Sino-Portuguese shaped double arch entrance in the middle of nowhere (hills and jungle all around).
