Nearly 8 km of cable strung from An Thoi out across the sea to Hon Thom, recognised by Guinness as the world's longest non-stop three-rope cable car. The crossing takes about 15 minutes over fishing boats and the islets between. At the far end is Hon Thom itself, with the Aquatopia water park and its own beaches, so allow half a day rather than a ride.

The water is clear and the sand fine, and because the resorts at either end manage their stretches it stays cleaner than Sao does in season. Older guides still describe it as military restricted, which it no longer is.

The Sun Group development at the island's southern tip, built in a Mediterranean style around the cable car station. Its landmark is the Kiss Bridge, two cantilevered spans reaching out over the water and stopping 30 cm apart. Historical Site

Built by the French in 1950, the Phu Quoc Prison could hold up to 40,000 people. The prison was recognised as a monument in 1983 and has been restored, and exhibits displaying original artefacts and depictions of the brutal tortures the prison had seen. In addition, the prison serves as a reminder of the plight of patriots during Vietnam’s colonial occupation and during the Vietnam War.

Bai Truong, the 20 km strip down the west coast where most of the island's hotels, bars and restaurants sit. Worth being straight about it: the sand is average by Phu Quoc standards and the shore is built up. The island's main night market, on Bach Dang street in Duong Dong, open from early evening until around midnight. Duong Dong Market is the biggest on the island, in the middle of the town, and it is a working day market rather than a night one: fish landed that morning, produce, dried squid and fish sauce by the bottle. An Thoi is regularly called the best diving in Vietnam: coral gardens and reef fish between roughly 10 and 35 metres, with wrecks and pinnacles among the southern islets. Ho Quoc Pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple on the island of Phu Quoc and was built in 2012. Spread over 100 hectares, the Pagoda complex features a Jade Statue at the entrance, a dragon staircase with carvings from the Han Dynasty, and a giant and fully functional bell. Bai Rach Vem, on the north coast, where red starfish sit in shallow water a few steps out from the sand. Go in the morning and at low tide. The population is visibly thinner than it once was, largely from being lifted out for photographs, so look and leave them where they are.
