Ambazari lake, Nagpur Overview

Located on the southwest border of Nagpur in Maharashtra in India, the Ambazari Lake is one of the eleven lakes and largest one that the city of Nagpur houses. Boating facilities in rowboats, as well as self-driven paddleboats, are also available to the visitors, which add to the fun and excitement of visiting the lake and help them to explore the surrounding scenic beauty.

The Ambazari Lake is situated just 6 kilometres away from the western outskirts of Nagpur and is looked after and maintained by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). It was initially built in the year 1870, under Bhonsle rule, for supplying water to the city. Just beside the Ambazari Lake, one can find the Ambazari Garden, which is particularly popular amongst the children and doubles up as an amusement park for them. The garden also has pavements walking, a fountain, electric rides and various amusement games for the kid. In fact, the lake derives its name Ambazari, because of this very fact that it is surrounded by mango trees. (The word Amba means mango in Marathi.) The Nag River also originates from here, and the site is indeed a marvel to look at!

Ambazari Garden at Ambazari Lake

Spread over 18 acres of land, the Ambazari Garden is a much loved picturesque tourist spot. A huge model of a dinosaur greets you at the entrance of the garden. To add to the fun here, the garden also offers a giant air-filled lion and teddy bear. Other amenities here include a mini train, see-saws, thrilling rides, slides, colombus and other joyful rides.

The highlight of the garden is no doubt the musical fountain. The fountain changes its momentum according to the rhythm of the continuous music, while the superb lighting effects add to the overall ambience. Musical fountain shows are held every week in the evenings on Saturdays and Sundays. With its dense climbers and woods, the garden provides a jubilant and refreshing experience. History of Ambazari Lake

The Ambazari Lake was built in the year 1870, under Bhonsle rule. The primary purpose of the lake was to supply water to the government officials and eminent people of the city through clay pipes. For over 30 years, the Ambazari Lake served its purpose exceptionally well. However, due to the constant pollution in the city, use of the lake as a water source to the city has now ceased.
