Surfing, Mauritius Overview

The vague idea of swimming out into the deeper waters of the island with a surfboard tucked safely within our arms is something the mind of every tourist converges into the moment they set their foot on Mauritian soil. The roots of this inevitable habit are watered mostly through several of potential tourists having watched the 1974 classic among movie-lovers, The Forgotten Island of Santosha at least once before they decided to board the flight to Mauritius. All of southern Mauritius is well renowned for having the best swells, which is only polished by the adequate climatic conditions of the area, making it real-life imagery of a surfer’s dream come true.

Best Spots to Surf in Mauritius

1. Tamarin Bay

The Tamarin Bay is located just to the south of Flic en Flac, giving its visitors an open exit from the south-western coast of the island out into the Indian Ocean. Before the release of The Forgotten Island of Santosha in the 1970s, the only people who had access to the waves of this bay were a few locals and a handful of wave chasers who had mapped their way out onto this island all the way from Australia. After this movie gained a cult following, dozens of surfers flocked to this place to witness the first-hand beauty of the legendary left-hand reef break with its 10 feet high swells out on Tamarin Bay. To combat the complicated waves which now hit the adjacent coast with massive strength, Tamarin Bay now hosts a local surf school which educates young children or rookies with the tips and tricks of surfing, to make sure that the bay does not turn into an attraction which caters to the experienced surfers alone.

2. Rivière des Galets

This village located by the southern coast of Mauritius is famous throughout the island for having the wildest and least industrialised shoreline which gives way to histrionic sea cliffs, complete with the hammering waves which come crashing from the gaps present in the reef which borders the beach. Rivière des Galets houses a moderately exposed reef, complete with a left-hand surf break, making it one of the most famous surfing locations opted by those who are accustomed to swimming in casual currents and riding occasional high waves. With most of its ideal winds hailing from the north, the best swells come into Rivière des Galets from the southwestern areas of the Indian Ocean. A word of warning though – the beautiful pebbles and intriguing urchins you see bordering the coastline of this beach aren’t just limited to areas of land. As a result, beware of urchins and rocks while you’re connecting with the deep waters.
