Honmyoji Temple, Kumamoto Overview
The Nichiren temple where Kato Kiyomasa is buried, approached up a long avenue and then 176 stone steps to a mausoleum placed deliberately at the same height as the castle keep so that he could keep watching over it. The climb is the point, and the view back across the city from the top is the payoff. Free, and quiet on weekdays. Note the temple buildings and the hill behind sit about 600 metres apart.
