Shri Shantadurga Temple, Goa Overview

Shri Shantadurga Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in Goa. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga who is one of the patron deities of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. The Shantadurga deity is the goddess who mediates between Vishnu and Shiva. The highlight of the temple is a golden palki (palanquin) on which the deity is carried around on Mahapanchami festival.

Shanta Durga Temple consists of one main temple and three smaller temples with a pyramidal roof and a dome. The floors and pillars of these temples are built of Kashmir stone. The temple was built around 1715 AD. It was relocated from Keloshi to the current location after the Portuguese gained control over the state. The beautiful Indo-Portuguese style of temple architecture and the magnificent idol of the deity are a treat to the eyes and make it a famous tourist attraction. The temple complex is situated on a sloping hill offering a stunning view of surrounding areas.
