Han River Bridge, Da Nang Overview

Han River Bridge is one of the prime examples of ingenious engineering! It is the first swing bridge in Vietnam and stretches over the Han River for 487 meters. Travel to the bridge at around 11 PM on a weekend when the traffic is stopped and the bridge swings on its axis for about 15 to 20 minutes to allow the shipping traffic in the Han River to pass through.

Inaugurated in the year 2000, it facilitates transport and links the eastern side of the river to the city centre. Another interesting factor in the construction of the Han River Bridge is that the citizens themselves contributed the money for building it. In addition to being an architectural marvel, it is also a tourist spectacle when it lights up at night in a colour palette of red, yellow and blue, signifying the city's vibrancy. It is the pride of the Da Nang dwellers and an example of the modernity of the city.

Architecture and Engineering

One of the first independent endeavours by Vietnamese engineers and architects, the Han River bridge is built upon a swing bridge principle and uses steel in most of its construction. The bridge is 487 metres long and 13 metres across. The bridge deck is reinforced with concrete while the steel beams take most of the structural weight.

Han River Bridge Swinging

Every weekend, between 11:00 PM to about 3:30 AM, the bridge swings 90 Degrees on its side to allow the river traffic to pass through. This spectacle attracts not only the tourists but also the locals who swear by the marvel each weekend. The lights of the bridge on every evening change every evening, revealing a stunning sight for the people.
